Study on the Coupling Characteristics of High-power Electromagnetic Pulses and Buildings

The time-domain coupling characteristics of different buildings under the impact of exterior high-power electromagnetic pulses (EMP) are studied in this paper. Field values and field distribution in horizontal sections inside buildings illuminated by high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP), ultra-wideband (UWB) pulse, high-power microwave (HPM), and Gaussian pulse are presented and compared in detail using the finite integration technique (FIT) method. Different factors such as the number of building layers which may affect the propagation characteristics are analyzed. These simulated results are useful for further evaluation of electromagnetic environment destruction effects and electromagnetic protection of sensitive devices or systems inside the buildings.
