Historical Development and Limitations of Logical Constitution on 88 Directing Method

The purpose of his study is to examine the historical fact and the limitations of logical constitution of 88 Directing Method. The 88 Directing Method(88向法) appeared first in the 『Jig-ji-won-jin(直指原眞)』, which logic is based on the 14 Jin-shin-su-beob Principles(十四進神水法) and the 10 Toe-shin-su-beob Principles(十退神水法) of Yang Gyun-song(楊筠松). Water and Su-gu(水口) is important factor in directing method, in the 88 Directing Method Su-gu is divided into Right and Left Curving Water(右旋水 & 左旋水). In case of Right Curving Water there include Jeong-saeng-hyang(正生向), Jah-saeng-hyang(自生向), Jeong-yang-hyang(正養向), Mok-yok-so-su(沐浴消水), Tae-hyang-tae-ryu(胎向胎流) and Jeol-hyang-jeol-ryu(絶向絶流). And Jeong-wang-hyang(正旺向), Jah-wang-hyang(自旺向), Mun-ko-so-su(文庫消水) and Soe-hyang-tae-ryu(衰向胎流) belong to the Left Curving Water. And in 『Jig-ji-won-jin』 a principal to identify 8-Layered directions with two distinct methods, Yeong-rok(迎祿) and Cha-rok(借祿). Although the 88 Directing Method has its own character, it still has logical limitation. First, there has been no verification about good or bad fortune, and it has a premise that good or bad fortune can be determined with only some particular factors such as Yin-yang & five elements, Feng shui and astronomy. Second, detail principle and explanation is omitted with which the Su-gu direction affects favorable fortune. Third, both Sa-guk-beob(四局法) and Po-tae-beob(胞胎法) are significantly dealt. However these methods are not able to be the favorable fortune themselves but to be the methods to identify the favorable forture. Fourth, treating Deuk-su(得水) and Pa-gu(破口) of water significantly is not for the favorable fortune but for the safety secure. Fifth, the directing method system is not constituted with Su-gu(水口) as the center but an expedient called Hyang-sang-jak-joo(向上作主), which shows its consistency lack. Practically unawareness on the origin and developing progress of the 88 Directing Method makes understand the necessity of Feng shui study.
