Effects of Medication Adherence and Healthy Lifestyle on Blood Pressure Control in Hypertensive Patients

Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the effects of medication adherence and healthy lifestyle on blood pressure control in hypertensive patients. Methods: The participants of this study were 2,736 with hypertensive patients participated in the eighth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2020 and 2021. Hierarchical logistic multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the effects of medication adherence and healthy lifestyle on blood pressure control in Korean hypertensive patients. Results: After controlling for general and health-related characteristics, the analysis revealed that medication adherence (OR=84.44, p<.001) and health lifestyle had a significant effect on blood pressure control. Additionally, smoking (OR=2.00, p<.001) and alcohol consumption (OR=1.37, p=.049) were found to have a significant impact on uncontrolled blood pressure. Conclusion: Among the factors affecting blood pressure control in Korean hypertensive patients, medication adherence was a strong explanatory variable, and smoking and drinking had a statistically significant effect on blood pressure control. Therefore, in order to manage uncontrolled blood pressure, it is important to adhere to prescribed medications and refrain from smoking and consuming alcohol.
