The Relationship Between Non-Suicidal Self-Injury and Suicidality Among Transgender and Gender Diverse Adults

This study examined the relationship between non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) characteristics and suicidality among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) adults (N = 180) across two timepoints in 2018. A history of engaging in NSSI was associated with suicidality and, among participants with an NSSI history, NSSI versatility was associated with suicidal thoughts but not attempts. NSSI versatility, but not NSSI frequency, mediated the relationship between suicidal thoughts at baseline and attempts at follow-up. These results highlight the importance of clinicians assessing for and treating NSSI, especially NSSI versatility, among TGD individuals, as doing so may help to reduce suicidal behaviors in this population.
