Flow and procrastination in the academic realm: a pilot study

Procrastination is a widespread phenomenon among students and it has been increasingly studied lately. As it has been shown to have an impact on one’s wellbeing and academic performance, finding elements that could help predict or manage it is of great importance. Therefore, exploring relationships between procrastination and other elements from a student’s life can reveal helpful insights. In this sense, this pilot study aimed at investigating a potential relationship between flow and procrastination in academic contexts, as academic activities should be flow-inducing, exciting and fulfilling for students. In order to examine the correlations between the two, a questionnaire was conducted among a small group of university students. The results indicate no significant correlations between flow and procrastination in academic contexts, therefore occurrence of flow did not show a potential of lowering the likelihood of procrastinating behavior.
