New Approach for Airflow Modulation to FOT and Pulmonary Secretion Therapy

Excessive accumulation of mucus occurs due to various situations or pathologies, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, post-COVID-19 sequelae, or general cases of pneumonia, bronchiolitis, and other respiratory problems and different techniques can be used in respiratory physiotherapy. However, problems with generating airflow signals up to 40 Hz, sanitizing difficulty, and low biocompatibility of the used materials, hinder the applicability and validation of new approaches and methodologies. In this paper, we evaluate a new approach to airflow modulation using a system with high biocompatibility, easy production and assembly, and high consistency on the airflow signal frequencies. Airflow signals with different frequencies and pressure levels are considered in the experiments, then, we analyze the energy associated with each frequency component of the generated signals to evaluate the system and its applicability for respiratory physiotherapy.
