Impact of surgery on sleep quality in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism
To evaluate the impact of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT-P) on patients’ sleep quality and identify changes after one year of parathyroidectomy. Cross-sectional study collecting patients followed in the ENT department for primary hyperparathyroidism, undergoing parathyroidectomy in 2023. Sleep quality was assessed after one year using the French version of the specific PHPQoL questionnaire and the PSQi questionnaire translated orally into Tunisian dialect for our patients. Thirty-five patients were included in our study. The average age was 48.7 years, the sex ratio M/F was 1/3. Preoperatively, the PHPQoL questionnaire revealed that the average total score was 46.58 points, the average PSQi score was 11.4 ± 3.70, reflecting both an alteration in sleep quality. 70% of patients had fractional sleep and 54 had excessive daytime sleepiness. One year after surgery, a significant improvement in sleep quality according to the PSQI and PHPQoL was noted in 80% of operated patients. The average PHPQoL total score increased from 46.58 to 65.7 points ( P < 0.001), and the PSQI score increased from 11.4 to 4.3 ( P < 0.001). PHPT-P has a significant impact on the quality of sleep of patients, but a successful parathyroidectomy leads to a notable improvement therein.
