Impact of surgery on quality of life in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism
To evaluate the impact of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT-P) on the quality of life (QoL) of patients after one year of parathyroidectomy. Cross-sectional study collecting patients followed in the ENT department for primary hyperparathyroidism, undergoing parathyroidectomy between 2020 and 2023. QoL was assessed after 1 year of parathyroidectomy using the French version of the specific PHPQoL questionnaire translated orally into Tunisian dialect for our patients. Fifty-five patients were included in our study. The average age was 50.7 years, the sex ratio M/F was 1/3. Preoperatively, the PHPQoL questionnaire revealed that the average total score was 56.47 points. 67.5% of patients had poor QoL (total PHPQoL score of 26 to 50 points), 26.5% had good QoL (between 51 to 100 points), and 6% had very poor QoL (between 0 to 100 points). The most frequently reported symptoms were fatigue (98.1%), bone/joint pain (75.2%), headache (85.1%) and irritability (87.5). One year after surgery, a significant improvement in quality of life, according to the PHPQoL, was noted in 85% of operated patients. The average PHPQoL total score increased from 56.47 to 79.7 points ( P < 0.001) with a significant reduction in the various symptoms initially reported ( P < 0.001). PHPT-P has a significant impact on the quality of life of patients, but a successful parathyroidectomy leads to a notable improvement therein.
