GIS Application for Creating Potential Flood Map Using AHP: A Case Study in Chaq-Chaq Valley, Sulaymaniyah City, Kurdistan Region, Iraq

This study aims to analyze and classify the hazards of flooding within the Chaq-Chaq sub-basin, the Sharazoor-Piramagroon basin, Sulaymaniyah City, Iraqi Kurdistan Region. The selected area is exposed to flooding from time to time. The study adopted many thematic maps, namely the topographic wetness index (TWI), elevation, slope, precipitation, land use–land cover (LULC), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), distance from the river, distance from the road, and drainage density. Modern technologies like remote sensing, GIS, ENVI, and AHP programs are used to obtain a digital map showing the classification of the flooding hazard within the sub-basin area. The results showed that large parts, about 50% of the basin area, are exposed to high and very high classes of flood risk. In comparison, areas of medium risk constituted about 27% of the total area of the sub-basin. Parts with low and very low risk recorded a percentage estimated at 22% of the total area. Large parts of the city of Sulaymaniyah face a high and very high risk of flooding, significantly impacting the tourist areas and economic facilities situated in the valley basin.
