The Performance of PEFC with Marimo-like Carbon Considering Relative Humidity
A proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is powered by humidified fuel and air gases supplied to the cells. We evaluated the effect of the relative humidity (RH) of the fuel and air gases on the I-V performance of the Marimo-like carbon (MC). MC is a higher order structure of carbon fibers. The RH increased the proton conductivity of the Nafion, while excessive humidification caused flooding. The highest maximum power density was 303 mW cm -2 (80% RH) for the Pt/MC and 165 mW cm -2 (60% RH) for the Pt/CB (carbon black). At all the RHs, the maximum power density of the Pt/MC was higher than that of the Pt/CB. The fiber structure and I/C (0.1) of the MC increase the mass diffusivity of the Pt/MC. The high mass diffusivity of the Pt/MC found to reduce flooding and promote the wetting of the Nafion by the generated water.
