Gold and Gold Alloys Electropolishing in Choline Chloride-Glycerol Deep Eutectic Solvents

Electropolishing (EP) is a finishing technique used to reduce the roughness of metallic surfaces while enhancing their brightness. This process enables the treatment of complex shaped parts and reduces processing time compared to conventional mechanical polishing methods. Electropolishing of precious metals typically requires the use of electrolytes containing cyanides and other toxic compounds, which reduces its attractiveness from an industrial perspective. Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) are emerging as a good alternative for the chemical and electrochemical dissolution of valuable metals, like gold, silver and copper. However, their use in the specific context of electrochemical polishing of precious alloys has not been considered so far. This work aims to evaluate the effectiveness of choline chloride-based DES in electropolishing 18K gold alloys. Their performance will be assessed in terms of roughness reduction, brightness enhancement and color preservation, all characteristics associated with the presence of a uniform dissolution.
