Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Polymerizable Boronium Ionic Liquids

This work investigates a set of novel polymerizable boronium ionic liquids (BILs) that were synthesized and characterized as candidates for solid or pseudo-solid electrolytes in energy storage applications. The target cation structures, [(1-v-imid)N 111 BH 2 ] + and [(1-a-pyrr)N 111 BH 2 ] + , were derivatized structures of high performance BILs from past studies to focus on polymerizable forms of N-heterocyclic and trimethylamine moieties. Ultimately ionic liquids with the bis(trifluoromethansulfonyl)imide (TFSI - ) anion were prepared and characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and cyclic voltammetry to assess purity, structure, thermal and electrochemical stability.
