Equity of access to educational satellite television programs for secondary school students

The education system in most countries has been challenged by the coronavirus pandemic and is struggling against the socio-economic and political impacts of the pandemic. To mitigate the educational impacts of the pandemic, the Ministry of Education Center for Educational Information & Communication Technology of Ethiopia has started transmission of some selected subjects to secondary school students through Television. This study aimed to analyze the distribution of the educational satellite television program for secondary school students in Ethiopia. Data were taken from the Poverty and Economic Growth in Ethiopia document and the annual educational statistics abstract of the Ministry of Education. The results indicated that educational satellite Television program broadcasting reaches a very small proportion of secondary school students who are from urban areas and economically privileged families. Most importantly, the educational satellite television programs have not been designed and implemented in line with the equity and equality principle of distributive justice in education. It is recommended that the Ethiopian Ministry of Education design a possible mechanism to access the educational satellite programs for all secondary school students in the country. Keywords: Distributive justice; education; equity of access; satellite television.
