Microwave-3D Matrix Combustor for LCVG Direct Combustion

The use of conventional fossil fuels poses challenges such as the limitation of energy resources and environmental issues like greenhouse gas emissions. However, biogas presents itself as a sustainable and renewable alternative energy source that can alleviate these problems. In this study, a novel form of microwave 3D matrix cavity combustor, which allowed direct combustion of biogas produced in small to medium-sized plants without the need for complex facilities such as separation or purification, was proposed. The study investigated the combustion characteristics according to the air ratio, total gas feed rate, and biogas ratio to figure out the optimal operating conditions. Experimental results from a microwave 3D matrix combustor demonstrated excellent combustion performance. The optimal operating conditions for biogas combustion were determined as follows: an air-fuel ratio of 1.1, total gas supply of 50 L/min, and a recirculation rate of 100%, with biogas composed of 60% CH4 and 40% CO2, resulting in a combustion efficiency of 99.6% and trace amounts of CO and unburn hydrocarbons at 0.13% and 0.01%, respectively.
