Treatment outcomes of CAD/CAM hybrid ceramic overlays on posterior teeth

Background: CAD/CAM hybrid ceramic restorations have been developed enormously in recent years. This study aimed to evaluate the treatment outcomes of CAD/CAM hybrid ceramic overlays (Shofu HC).Methods: A prospective, descriptive clinical trial study has been conducted on 30 permanent posterior teeth with cavities that need to be restored by overlay. All 30 teeth were prepared and restored by CAD/CAM hybrid ceramic overlays (Shofu disc HC). The treatment outcomes were assessed in the period of 3 months with 3 times of evaluating (immediately after cementation and 1 month, 3-month after cementation) following the USPHS criteria (marginal adaptation, color match, anatomic form, cavo-surface marginal discoloration, secondary caries).Results: 76.7% of the restorations were rated as having perfect marginal adaptation (score 0), while 23.3% showed slight discrepancies. 46.7% of the restorations were deemed to have perfect color match (score 0). All restorations maintained their anatomic form (score 0) perfectly at all time points, with no deviations noted. There were no cases of marginal discoloration immediately after placement. No instances of secondary caries (score 0) were recorded at any time point.Conclusions: Result of this study showed that 27 out of 30 restorations (90%) were clinically acceptable, only 3 overlays were clinically unacceptable with the color match criterion.
