Результаты всероссийской переписи населения 2020 г. на Чукотке

The latest Nationwide Population Census (NPC) of the Russian Federation is fundamentally different from all those previously conducted. In Chukotka, NPC 2020 was arranged in two stages: first, in remote villages, then in the city of Anadyr and the settlement of Ugolnye Kopy. The census results showed the decrease in the population of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. According to the published data, 47,490 residents live in Chukotka. This is less than in 2010 (50,526 inhabitants). There are 32,389 urban and 15,101 rural residents in the area. Representatives of over 90 ethnicities live in the Okrug. An analysis of published materials from the NPC 2002, 2010, and 2020 in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug showed changes in the age and sex structure as well as in the ethnic composition of the population. Among the representatives of the indigenous peoples of Chukotka, the number of Chukchi (13,299 persons) and Kerek (6 persons) increased; the number of Eskimos (1,460 persons), Evens (1,286 persons), Chuvans (743 persons), Koryaks (54 persons), and Yukaghirs (152 persons) decreased. The census showed the decrease in the number of people speaking the Chukchi (11.85 %) and the Eskimo languages (9.32 %) and the increase in the number of native speakers of the Even (23.97 %) and the Yukaghir languages (9.27 %). Despite the difficulties in carrying out NPC 2020, the ambiguous attitude of the expert community and citizens towards its implementation, the population census remains the most important tool in generating information about the ethnic composition of the country's population, in general, and that of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, in particular.
