Reducing Total Harmonic Distortion in Photovoltaic Systems: A Genetic Algorithm Approach for Sustainable Energy in Biomedical Facilities
Biomedical facilities, including clinics, research labs, and hospitals, require a reliable and clean energy supply to power critical equipment, such as diagnostic tools, medical devices, and environmental control systems.Photovoltaic (PV) systems have emerged as a sustainable alternative for reducing operational costs and providing consistent energy. However, power quality issues, notably Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), can affect the operation of sensitive medical devices, posing risks to equipment performance and patient care. This study presents a Genetic Algorithm (GA) approach to optimizing THD in an 8-module, 4 kW PV system, reducing THD from 8% to 3% to comply with IEEE standards.A comparative analysis was performed between the optimized PV system and conventional grid power, demonstrating significant reductions in THD, energy costs, and equipment wear. The results indicate that optimized PV systems can provide a more reliable, efficient, and cost-effective energy solution for biomedical facilities, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
