Active Flux-based Torque Compensation Method of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors for Traction Application

This technical paper presents an approach for torque estimation in Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) through Active flux estimation employing model reference adaptive observer (MRAO). The proposed method demonstrates applicability across diverse PMSM motor types, including Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM), Surface Permanent Magnet (SPM), and Synchronous Reluctance Motors (SynRM). Leveraging Popov's hyperstability criterion for parameter adaptation enhances the robustness and accuracy of torque estimation, addressing challenges associated with varying operating conditions. Furthermore, the paper introduces a torque compensation mechanism based on the estimated torque values. This feature contributes to the overall control system's efficiency by mitigating torque discrepancies and ensuring precise motor performance throughout its operating conditions. Simulations with high fidelity FEA data of motor and experimental verifications on four different motor prototypes further support the usability of the proposed method especially for traction application.
