EV Charging Infrastructure: Smooth Power Delivery Using Pulse Charging Methods for Swappable Charging Station

The batteries are the primary power source for electric vehicle applications. The operation of the batteries is dependent on their regular charging process, where the charging patterns influence both the efficiency and longevity of batteries. Therefore, there is a need for an optimal charging strategy, which aims to extend the cycle life of the batteries. Among all the existing charging methods the pulse charging method is beneficial, which helps in synchronizing chemical reactions with the charging process, stabilizing reactions, and improving efficiency. Hence, this paper proposes an optimum charging algorithm based on pulse charging, which includes the combination of constant current, pulse current (PC), and pulse and burp current (PBC) charging for the swappable charging station. The power flowing from the grid to the charger side is pulsating in nature during PC and PBC charging. Therefore, a charging algorithm is proposed in this paper to provide smooth power transfer during PC and PBC charging. Furthermore, to reduce grid dependency, renewable sources such as wind and solar power are incorporated along with the main grid to form a DC microgrid environment. This system is capable of supplying excess power from renewable sources to the grid. This paper incorporates analysis and results of the proposed charging algorithm and renewable energy based system.
