Analyzing Impact of Current Distribution on Parallel Connected Battery Packs in Telecom Applications
Telecommunication networks rely heavily on robust and reliable power systems as back-up to ensure uninterrupted service. In order to meet the desired load, multiple low voltage (LV) packs are connected in parallel. While research has been conducted on parallel-connected cells, there is a noticeable gap in the literature concerning parallel-connected packs. This research paper investigates the intricacies of parallel connected low voltage Li-ion battery packs for telecom application, with a primary focus on understanding and analyzing current variations across the battery packs during different scenarios. The study examines current distribution when a new battery pack is connected in parallel with older packs with lesser charge capacity. The paper further explores current distribution when slight capacity variation is present in the packs. Also, it investigates the effects of SOC imbalance on the current distribution in the packs. It was observed that the long-term life of the packs is affected if large initial state of health variation is present between the packs. For smaller variation in health and for SOC imbalance within the packs there is minimal influence on the health of the packs.
