Are IDS Violating Segmentation in Industrial Networks?

The integration of Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) into Industrial Control Systems (ICS) presents a paradoxical challenge wherein the very tools designed to enhance security may inadvertently introduce vulnerabilities, particularly concerning network segmentation. This paper conceptualizes common mistakes found in the industrial environment, analyzing the vul-nerabilities that could be introduced with IDS implementations within ICS, and exploring how attackers could exploit these systems to orchestrate cyberattacks, thereby violating segmentation principles and compromising critical infrastructure operations. The paper also provides a set of practical recommendations and guidelines to mitigate the risk.
