Assessing the Level of C- Reactive Protein in the Blood of Individuals with Long Term Obstructive Lung Diseases- A Study that Examines Different Groups at One Point in Time.
Individuals suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease experience continuous inflammation throughout their body, which can be evaluated by checking the levels of C- reactive protein in their blood. Objective: To investigate the possibility of using C- reactive protein as a standalone indicator of disease prognosis in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Methods: We surveyed 50 COPD patients at the Respiratory Medicine outpatient services at Medanta Abdur Razzaque Ansari Memorial Weavers' Hospital in Ranchi from March 2021 to August 2023. We included patients aged 18-67 after getting approval from the Research Ethics Board. We measured lung volumes and capacities using a computerized Spirometer Helios 401 and estimated serum c-reactive protein using the BeneSpheraTM CRP Latex Slide test kit. Findings and analysis: This research was carried out on a group of fifty individuals with COPD, where the presence of CRP in their blood was linked to the severity of COPD (p=0.002), but there was a notable inverse relationship between CRP levels and lung function tests, such as FEV1 (r=-0.451, p=0.001), FEV1/FVC (r=-0.617, p<0.001), and PEFR (r=-0.398, p=0.004). Conclusion: Our findings suggest a connection between CRP levels in the blood and the severity of COPD. This indicates that CRP could serve as a predictor of COPD prognosis, as even a slight increase in CRP levels is linked to a worse prognosis in COPD patients.
