A Comparative Evaluation of The Perception of the Layperson to the Variation in Soft Tissue Esthetics During Smile

The purpose of this study was to determine how laypersons perceive the alterations in characteristics of surrounding soft tissues during a posed smile.Introduction: All individuals aspire to attain a smile that is aesthetically pleasing, regardless of their social or cultural background.Patients from various walks of life seek out dental care providers specifically for this purpose.A possible reason for patients seeking a better look is the fact that appearance may influence relevant concepts such as personality, physical attractiveness, professional success, intelligence, and happiness. This was observed in a Research evaluation of photographs of pre and post-treatment cases of aesthetic changes Material and Methods: an ideal smile was taken from three views i.e., Frontal, Profile, and Oblique, and smiles were digitally altered to produce 65 different alterations in the soft tissues surrounding the smile.150 laypersons were given the 65 altered photographs and 2 ideal smile photographs and a Force Q-Sort Table was given to each evaluator to give a score for each photo. Conclusions: Laypeople generally find one-sided or uneven changes less attractive in terms of aesthetics.Specifically, reducing bulbous papillae in the front upper teeth, decreasing the free gingival margin, and forming black triangles between teeth due to the shape of the gum tissue between them are the most noticeable factors affecting the beauty of a smile and are considered unappealing.
