Isolation, Identification and Biological Evaluation of aNovel Protein from Spergulaarvensis
Researchers are looking into peptides as an alternative anticancer agent to address the limitations of present medicines.Spergula arvensis, an edible plant, has been employed against pulmonary tuberculosis. No anticancer activity, however, has been reported for this plant and hence the present study. The plant Spergula arvensis was subjected to detailed analysis and proteins were isolated, purified and evaluated for their anticancer activity. In vitro anticancer activity was carried out using "HeLa (Cervical Cancer)", A549 (Lung carcinoma), Hep2 (Larynx carcinoma) and "OAW42 (Ovary cancer Cells)" cell lines. Results reveal that the bioactive protein isolated has a molecular weight of approximately 52kDa and shows potent activity against the cervical cell line, HeLa.The anticancer efficacy of a plant protein isolated from Spergula arvensis is impressive.
