A model-adaptive compensation algorithm for additive-subtractive hybrid manufacturing

Abstract Additive-subtractive hybrid manufacturing (ASHM) is a manufacturing method that combines additive manufacturing (AM) with subtractive manufacturing (SM) techniques. Given that the surface accuracy of ASHM components primarily relies on numerical control (NC) machining, it is imperative to incorporate model compensation to preserve finishing allowances, thereby obtaining additive manufacturing (AM) models from design models. This paper proposes a model adaptive compensation algorithm capable of dynamically adjusting the design model based on both model characteristics and the AM process. This algorithm not only ensures the retention of suitable finishing allowances but also addresses part size errors arising from the AM process. Comparative analysis against traditional CAD reconstruction methods highlights the algorithm’s superior attributes in terms of accuracy, efficiency, and adaptability when confronted with intricate model compensation scenarios.
