Evaluation of critical temperatures of as-cast Co-based superalloys as a function of alloying elements and their effect on microstructure

Co-based superalloys are of great interest in the aeronautical and aerospace industry due to their superior thermal performance compared to Ni-based superalloys. This work explores the influence of elemental additions (Ni, Al, Cr, Si, and Ti) on the critical temperatures (liquidus, solidus, solvus, and eutectic) and microstructural features of several Co systems fabricated by vacuum induction melting until the final Co-30Ni-10Al-4Cr-2Si-2Ti (wt%) composition was obtained. Differential Scanning Calorimetry results indicated high thermal stability concerning the γ' phase formation. Si and Ti additions suppressed the eutectic presence in the proposed superalloy, which is desirable to avoid the incipient melting of components. Instead, the present work exhibits a low-density Co-based superalloy conformed of a continuous γ/β microstructure with γ' precipitating uniformly. These characteristics make the Co-30Ni-10Al-4Cr-2Si and Co-30Ni-10Al-4Cr-2Si-2Ti superalloys promising candidates to be subjected to high temperatures in comparison with current Co-based superalloys.
