Maqam and Rhythm Analysis in Folk Songs in Hijaz Maqam Compiled from Şanlıurfa Province

This study focuses on the hijaz works belonging to Şanlıurfa Province that are recorded in the 'TRT Repertoire'. The main reason for prioritizing the TRT repertoire is that, as in other oral traditions, improvisation is common in folk music performances, and the performance differs due to decorations and the performer's unique attitude. Therefore, institutional and written objective data regarding the folk songs subject to analysis were used as the main source. There are a total of forty-nine works from the province of Şanlıurfa in the repertoire. Twelve of these were determined to be in the hicaz maqam, and these works were examined individually, based on their musical material, rather than their regional differences. In this regard, descriptive content analysis method was used. The main purpose of using the descriptive content analysis method is to classify the folk songs in question, summarize their content and determine their main themes. In classifying the folk songs, the musical material, the characteristics of the maqam, its course, transitions and stops, and its procedural and rhythmic features were taken into consideration. Thus, it was possible to make a classification by revealing the similarities and differences of the works. As a result of the research, it was determined that special flavors were used in the folk songs in question, and that the folk songs were especially in the sofyan style, but also included syncopated rhythms. It is anticipated that the research will contribute to the planned studies on classification of written repertoires.
