CAD-Driven Quantification of Left-Right Differences: A Study on Goat Bone Asymmetry and Its Relevance in Orthopedics
This research study aimed to accurately quantify the geometrical differences between the left and right goat bones in terms of anatomical dimensions and surface-to-surface deviations. The assessment of such differences is crucial for understanding the inherent variations in bone morphology and potential implications for functional asymmetry. This study investigates the asymmetry in bone dimensions between the left and right sides of goats A, B, and C, focusing on dimensions A, B, C, D, E, F, H, D1, D2, and D3.The investigation employs statistical analyses, incorporating mean differences, standard deviations, standard errors, 95% confidence intervals, t-values, and p-values.While dimensional analysis exhibits bilateral symmetry with no significant differences, dimension H shows potential asymmetry (mean difference: -1.8767, p-value = 0.067), prompting further exploration into its implications.Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the anatomical variations in goat bones, emphasizing the importance of considering asymmetry in comparative studies. The nuanced findings in dimension H warrant future investigations and contribute to a foundation for a more nuanced understanding of goat skeletal structures. The study involved a sample of goat bones, and measurements were obtained for volume, surface area, and length on both the left and right sides. The average left-right differences were determined to be 95.4 mm3 (SD 66.2 mm3) for volume, 32.7 mm2 (SD 22.9 mm2) for surface area, and 0.28 mm (SD 0.4 mm) for length. These findings demonstrate the quantitative disparities in these anatomical dimensions between the left and right sides of goat bones.Furthermore, the study investigated the surface-to-surface deviation between the left and right sides. The average surface-tosurface deviation was found to be 0.26 mm (SD 0.2 mm), indicating the degree of irregularity or variation in surface morphology between corresponding areas on both sides. This research study provides valuable insights into the quantification of geometrical differences in goat bone morphology and highlights the importance of considering left-right variations in anatomical dimensions and surface characteristics. The findings contribute to a better understanding of bone asymmetry, which can have implications in fields such as comparative anatomy, evolutionary biology, and orthopedics.
