Walking of uphill slopes in immersive virtual environments
We explore three visual manipulation techniques aiming to create a realistic feeling of walking an uphill slope while in reality being on flat ground. The techniques are based on real physical visual perception and consist of modification of height and display of virtual shoes, modification of speed, and modification of view pitch. Quantitative and qualitative evaluation indicated that modification of speed, and pitch contributed to user discomfort, as well as a general increase in discomfort correlating with the slope’s increasing inclination. However, height manipulation was well received and can be used in future projects for more realistic landscape.
