Effect Of Selected Yogic Practices OnReaction Time And Coordination Of Male Inter-Collegiate Level Sportsperson

Yoga is the practice of uniting the human soul, or consciousness, with the spirit, or universal consciousness. The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the effect of selected yogic practices on reaction time and coordination of male sportspersons participating is inter-collegiate level sports and games competitions of Kuvempu University. To achieve the purpose of the study, forty inter-collegiate levels male sports persons (n=40) were selected from Kuvempu University, Shivamogga. The subjects were randomly assigned to two groups namely, experimental group (n=20) and Control group (n=20).The respective training was given to the experimental group at an interval of three days per weeks Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for the training period of twelve weeks. The control group was not given any sort of training except their routine daily tasks. The reaction time and hand coordination of the selected subjects was assessed through standard test.Forty eight yoga asanas were practiced by the subjects every week i.e., three days a week and the same asanas were repeated every week for twelve weeks duration. The experimental group (Experimental Group) underwent systematic training for twelve weeks and at the same time control group (Control group) did not participate in any form of Yogic practices. The Yogic practices selected included Asanas, Pranayama, Suryanamaskar and Meditation. The practices were selected by the researcher on the basis of his insight, in consultation with Supervisor and experts in the field of Yoga.Descriptive statistics Mean and Standard Deviations were calculated in the present study to understand the normalcy of data. The paired sample't' ratio was calculated to find significant difference between the mean during pre and post-test of the experimental as well as control groups. The level of significance for the present investigation was 0.05.The yogic practices selected in the present investigation have favourable effect on reaction time and hand coordination of inter-collegiate level sports persons. The reaction time and hand coordination of Experimental group significantly improved from Pre to Post-test situation. At the same time it is noted that the reaction time and hand coordination of control group did not significantly improve from Pre and Post-test situation.
