Mathematical Modeling in the Dispersion of Contaminants in Urban Waste Landfills

The consumption of disposable items, excessive packaging and products with planned obsolescence has led to increasing production of municipal solid waste (MSW). When waste is not treated properly, it can cause several negative impacts on the environment, such as soil and water contamination. Thus, the present work presents a study of a two-dimensional model of the dispersion of pollutants in landfills, considering the governing equation in dimensionless form. The problem under study is hypothesized to be the continuous and uniform leakage of an MSW storage cell. The adopted model is solved by the Generalized Integral Laplace Transform Technique (GILTT) method, whose solution is analytical, except for the truncation error in the infinite series. The results obtained show that the proposed method is effective in reproducing the physical characteristics of the problem and when compared with other results available in the literature, highlighting the influence of the Péclet number parameter in the study.
