How to Make eScience Work in the Real-World: from AVs to AI

For data and eScience to fully realise its potential a full system approach needs to be taken to its development, deployment and use. This needs to consider the full sociotechnical-economic environment in which the technology will be used and include input from the regulators, policy makers and end-users from the very beginning. These varied stakeholders generally have different incentives and constraints and often speak different languages. Academics can be well placed to bring together these different parts of the innovation jigsaw. Acting as trusted agents between the technology developers, regulators and society and providing interdisciplinary perspective needed for the successful implementation on next generation technologies.

Abstract

For data and eScience to fully realise its potential a full system approach needs to be taken to its development, deployment and use. This needs to consider the full sociotechnical-economic environment in which the technology will be used and include input from the regulators, policy makers and end-users from the very beginning. These varied stakeholders generally have different incentives and constraints and often speak different languages. Academics can be well placed to bring together these different parts of the innovation jigsaw. Acting as trusted agents between the technology developers, regulators and society and providing interdisciplinary perspective needed for the successful implementation on next generation technologies.
