LONGEVIDADE DAS PRÓTESES DE ARTICULAÇÃO TEMPOROMANDIBULAR NO TRATAMENTO PARA DEGENERAÇÕES ARTICULARES: UMA REVISÃO DE LITERATURA

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is essential for functions such as chewing, speaking and swallowing. When degenerated by conditions such as rheumatoid, ankylosis or severe trauma, replacement with dentures can alleviate pain and restore jaw function. Although advances in materials, such as titanium alloys and biocompatible polymers, and in prosthesis design have improved biological compatibility and wear resistance, the longevity of these prostheses still faces important challenges. Factors such as surgical technique, the body's inflammatory response and quality of materials are decisive for long-term success. Recent studies highlight the importance of customizing prostheses, especially with the use of 3D printing, which allows better adaptation to the patient's anatomy, increasing durability and reducing complications. However, complications such as infection and dislocation are still concerns, and the need for surgical revisions is greater in patients with chronic inflammatory conditions. Careful patient selection and appropriate postoperative management are crucial to minimize these risks. Future research should focus on improving materials and techniques, as well as developing more refined protocols for patient selection and postoperative management, aiming to improve patients' quality of life and increase the longevity of TMJ prostheses.
