Relationship Between Components Of Lower Limbs And Energy Metabolism During Cycle Ergometer Movement

PURPOSE: To explore the influence of lower limb components of different genders on energy metabolism during the cycle ergometer movement in adults, and to provide scientific guidance for different people to do cycle ergometer exercise. METHODS: Thirty men(20.8 ± 1.1 yrs) and thirty women(21.1 ± 1.5 yrs) were recruited and participated in the study that was approved by IRB at Beijing Sport University. The male participants did cycle ergometer movement with 100 W and 150 W load, the female participants did cycle ergometer movement with 100 W. The body composition was determined using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry(DEXA). The energy metabolism at rest and during exercise was measured by Cortex MetaMax 3B portable gas metabolism analyzer. The energy expenditure(EE) and net energy expenditure (NEE) was calculated by the formula. RESULTS: (1) Druing cycle ergometer movement with 100 W and 150 W load, the male participants' lean body weight(LBW) of the lower limb had significant negative correlations with VO2/BW(body weight), VO2/LBW, VCO2/BW, VCO2/LBW, EE/BW, EE/LBW, NEE/BW and NEE/LBW(p < 0.05). (2) Druing cycle ergometer movement with 150 W load, the fat weight of the lower limb also had a significant negative correlation with VO2/BW, EE/BW and NEE/BW(r = -0.492, -0.646, -0.588, p < 0.05). (3) The fat weight of the lower limb had a significant negative correlation with ΔVE/ΔVCO2(r = -0.474, -0.564, P < 0.05) at 100 W and 150 W. (4) Druing cycle ergometer movement with 100 W load, the female participants' LBW of the lower limb had significant negative correlations with VO2/LBW, VCO2/BW, VCO2/LBW, EE/BW, EE/LBW, NEE/BW and NEE/LBW(p < 0.05). While the fat weight of the lower limb had not significant relationship with energy metabolism. CONCLUSIONS: During the cycle ergometer movement, there were negative correlations between lean body weight of lower limb and gas metabolism and energy expenditure. When the men did cycle ergometer movement, with the increase of the fat weight of the lower limb, the solpe of ΔVE/ΔVCO2 decreased. During cycle ergometer movement with 100 W, the regression equation for men was: Y = -2.387 × 10-6X + 0.229, for women was: Y = -2.643 × 10-6X1-5.286 × 10-6X2 + 0.23(Y: NEE/BW, X/X1: LBW, X2: lower limb weight). The regression equation for men at 150 W was: Y = -1.282 × 10-5X + 0.279(Y: EE/BW, X: lower limb weight). the National Key R&D Program of China (2022YFC2010201)
