Dietary Intake Of N-3 Pufa's Correlation To Strength And Muscle Mass In Young Adults.

Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3PUFA) intake has been associated with increased expression of proteins involved in skeletal muscle hypertrophy, via its incorporation into myocyte membrane phospholipids, which may lead to increased membrane fluidity and uptake of amino acids, grater intracellular signaling of the mTOR—p70s6k pathway, and reduced protein degradation by inhibiting NF-kB and increasing myocyte sensitivity to acetylcholine signaling, thus improving skeletal muscle contractility. Thus, higher dietary intake of n3-PUFA could augment gains in muscle strength and mass. Purpose: To determine whether dietary intake of n3-PUFA is correlated with muscle strength and mass in trained healthy young males. Methods: 48 healthy male adults (age 28 ± 6y) were accessed with 1-repetitium maximum test using leg press 45°, body composition using air displacement plethysmography (BOD POD body composition system) and skeletal muscle (vastus lateralis) transactional area using a B-mode ultrasound, with linear vectorial transductor (SonoAce R3, Samsung-Medison). Furthermore, all participants filled a 24-hour food recall, which were quantified in a software (Nutritionist Pro version 7.3, Axxya Systems), and n-3 PUFAs intake quantification was calculated using the USDA database. Correlations were made using Pearson's Correlation Coefficient (r). Results: Participants mean dietary intake of n-3 PUFAs (DHA, EPA and ALA) was 1.38 g ± 0.8, lower than the recommended by the World Health Organization. Vastus Lateralis transactional area was positively correlated with n-3 PUFA dietary intake (r = 0.40; p < 0.05; Moderate correlation). Fat mass, lean mass and 1-repetitium maximum test were not correlated to n-3 PUFA dietary intake (r = -0.03, p = 0.8; r = -0.05, p = 0.8; r = 0.2, p = 0.9). Conclusion: Dietary intake of n-3PUFAs was correlated (moderately) with muscle mass, but not with lean mass, fat mass or muscle strength in trained healthy young males. - n3-PUFA dietary intake correlations 1-RM (kg) AST - Vastus Lateralis (cm2) Fat Mass (kg) Lean Mass (kg) n-3PUFA Dietary Intake (r value) 0.015 0.40 -0.03 -0.05 p value 0.92 0.0082* 0.90 0.76 FAPESP - 2022/02229-4
