The Association Of VISA-A, UWRI, And PROMIS-29 Measures In Quantifying Function Of Runners With Non-insertional Achilles Tendinopathy
The Association of VISA-A, UWRI, and PROMIS-29 Measures in Quantifying Function of Runners with Non-insertional Achilles tendinopathy INTRODUCTION: Achilles tendinopathy (AT) is a common running-related injury (RRI) that negatively impacts health. Symptom severity can be measured by the Victorian Institute of Sport Assessment (VISA-A), while the University of Wisconsin Running Injury and Recovery Index (UWRI) evaluates impact of RRI. PROMIS-29 assesses pain intensity and seven health domains. The associations between VISA-A, UWRI, and essential health domains in PROMIS-29 remain unexplored. PURPOSE: To evaluate association of VISA-A, UWRI, and PROMIS-29 scores in runners with AT. We hypothesize lower VISA-A and UWRI scores correlate with reduced physical function and other PROMIS-29 measures. METHODS: Forty-five runners diagnosed with >3 months of non-insertional AT (41 ± 12 years-old, BMI 23.4 ± 2.5 kg/m2; 21 female and 24 male) enrolled in an intervention study. Inclusion criteria included a VISA-A baseline score less than 80 and symptom duration >3 months. Baseline assessments included UWRI, PROMIS-29, and VISA-A. T-scores were calculated for each domain of the PROMIS-29. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients were calculated for each outcome including VISA-A, UWRI, and PROMIS-29 subscales and pain intensity. RESULTS: Higher VISA-A scores correlated with improved physical function, higher UWRI scores, and reduced pain intensity and interference. A negative association was observed with runners’ scores on the UWRI and pain intensity (all p < 0.05) (Table 1). Not all measures of health align with functional impairments, suggesting that multiple patient reported outcomes are required to capture both physical function along with sleep, fatigue, social roles, depression, and anxiety.
