Effect Of Hyperbaric Oxygen Combined With Astaxanthin On Sport Fatigue

The generation of sport fatigue is a necessary prerequisite for the growth of competitive ability. However, the excessive accumulation of fatigue will lead to adverse consequences. Therefore, sport fatigue is not only the "catalytic enzyme", but also the "speed limit." PURPOSE: To determine the effects of astaxanthin on reducing the side effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) intervention and eliminating chronic sport fatigue. METHODS: A total of 30 active rugby players (15 males, 15 females, 18.53±1.80 yrs) were randomly divided into control group (CON), HBO group (HOX), and HBO combined astaxanthin group (HOX+NAX) in accordance with gender, age, and sport grade matching. The antioxidant, inflammation, blood routine, metabolism, and hormone parameters of each group were compared on Monday mornings during the 4-week intervention. Incremental exhaustive exercise was performed before and after intervention. Repeated measure ANOVA were used for statistical tests. RESULTS: Four-week intervention can improve sport fatigue by different degrees. Time to exhausted, maximum power, and maximum oxygen uptake before and after the 4-week intervention experiment showed no differences among groups. Compared with CON group, Hb (154.30 ± 10.69 vs 140.00 ± 11.80, P = 0.019) increased significantly in HOX group during the 4-week intervention. In terms of metabolites, HOX and HOX+NAX groups presented decreased levels of UA (270.70 ± 98.61 vs 397.30 ± 123.52, P = 0.007; 305.10 ± 56.79 vs 397.30 ± 123.52, P = 0.043) and the oxidative stress markers CK (616.40 ± 122.62, 492.20 ± 95.72 vs782.30 ± 258.93, P < 0.05) and LDH (369.93 ± 139.24, 244.84 ± 67.57 vs 645.61 ± 140.63, P < 0.001). The levels of SOD (130.32 ± 6.29, 127.88 ± 2.72 vs 116.16 ± 12.24, P < 0.01), and GSH-Px increased (197.19 ± 10.42, 197.71 ± 4.44 vs 185.70 ± 10.44, P < 0.01) with the inflammation indicators CRP (1.55 ± 1.65, 1.42 ± 0.80 vs 3.55 ± 2.16, P < 0.01) decreased. Meanwhile, hormone levels remained stable. CONCLUSIONS: Four-week intervention of HBO combined with astaxanthin have a synergistic effect, which could significantly promote the clearance of metabolites, prevent oxidative stress, regulate inflammatory response, exerting a good effect on sport fatigue elimination.
