Senescent cells: a therapeutic target in correction of aging
Cellular senescence is a fundamental mechanism of aging. The number of senescent cells increases in various tissues with aging. These cells have some structural and functional features. Dysfunctional senescent cells and numerous appropriate proteins can negatively affect the function of tissues and organs and contribute to aging. Senotherapeutic drugs designed to eliminate senescent cells and/or modify their phenotype open up potential opportunities for prolonging healthy longevity, preventing and treating age-associated diseases. This review is devoted to the main features of senescent cells, results of preclinical and clinical studies of senotherapeutic drugs, as well as potential opportunities in correction of aging.
