Previous studies have suggested that depressive symptoms appear to transmit from person to person; thus, Alho et al (2024) sought to understand the role of peer effects in mental health problems in adolescents. A study of national interlinked registry data from more than 700,000 adolescents who attended schools in Finland revealed an association between peers diagnosed with a mental disorder during adolescence and an increased risk of a diagnosis of a mental disorder in the future. The risk was highest in the year after exposure to a peer with a mental disorder diagnosis and increased with multiple diagnosed individuals in the peer network.
