Virtualized Terminal Using Terahertz-Band for Ultra High Capacity Towards Beyond 5G and 6G
The focus on next-generation technologies beyond 5G and 6G has intensified. The 2030s are projected to usher in an era where society thrives through advancements in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), which integrate physical and cyber spaces. To achieve this, wireless systems must support ultra-high-capacity data transmission. The terahertz band offers significant potential for such high-capacity communications, albeit with challenges like large propagation losses and attenuation. This paper shows a virtualized terminal concept that combines terahertz and millimeter waves to address these challenges, thereby enabling high-capacity data transmission in Beyond 5G/6G networks. The paper details the configuration of the virtualized terminal, including the use of the 300 GHz band. Simulations were conducted to evaluate the transmission performance during walking, revealing that maintaining line of sight (LOS) between the user equipment and relay devices is crucial for optimal performance. Empirical experiments with prototype hardware demonstrated the viability of polarization multiplexing in both terahertz and millimeter-wave bands. The experiments achieved a transmission rate of approximately 19.07 Gbps for short distances, although performance varied due to hardware limitations.
