Impact of Wi-Fi Network Traffic Load on Video Transmission and Remote Control of Unmanned Guided Vehicle
Wireless network performance is very important for remote control of robots using wireless communication. When using Wi-Fi networks without QoS control, there is concern that the performance of remote control may deteriorate when the traffic of other users in the same network increases. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of Wi-Fi network traffic load on video transmission and remote control of unmanned guided vehicle (UGV). First, we compare the performances of local 5G and Wi-Fi networks in the no-load case and show that the throughput and delay performances are nearly identical. However, when the Wi-Fi network is not subjected to QoS control, delays of 1 second or more may occur, which may affect remote control. Finally, the impact of traffic load on the remote control of the UGV is evaluated by assessing the “overshot angle” at which the vehicle goes too far after the end of the rotational motion. When loaded on the Wi-Fi network, the “overshot angle” increases by about 0.1 radians. The above results indicate that remote control is affected by the presence of load.
