Awareness on the Effects of E-Cigarettes and Vaping on Periodontal Disease in the General Population Regardless of Usage History
Introduction: Periodontitis is a prevalent, severe gum disease that involves the inflammation and destruction of the tissues and bone supporting the teeth, potentially leading to tooth loss. The primary cause of periodontitis is the accumulation of bacterial plaque, which triggers an inflammatory response in the gums. Recently, the increasing use of e-cigarettes and vapes has raised concerns about their impact on oral health. Although marketed as a safer alternative to traditional smoking, e-cigarettes and vapes pose significant risks to periodontal health, contributing to the onset and progression of periodontitis. Aim: To evaluate the awareness on the effects of E-Cigarettes and vaping on periodontal disease in the general population regardless of usage history. Study design: A web-based questionnaire study Material and Methods: A web-based questionnaire study consisting of 26 questions related to the awareness on the effects of E-cigarettes and vapes on periodontal health regardless of usage history. The questionnaire was circulated among the general population and a total of 401 responses were recorded. Results: This detailed summary encapsulates the key findings of the questionnaire on smoking habits, awareness, and attitudes towards e-cigarettes and oral health as moderate. Conclusion: The study revealed that the responders are aware of the effects of E-cigarettes and Vapes on the periodontal health and advocate for quitting smoking habit for better oral and over all health.
