Assessment of Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) in Diabetic Patients Undergoing Insulin Therapy

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic, metabolic disease characterised by elevated levels of blood glucose levels. Diabetes Mellitus is broadly classified into 2 types out of which the most common is type 2 Diabetes mellitus which occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or does not produce enough insulin. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of the study was to assess the Health Related QoL (quality of life) in Diabetic patients on Insulin therapy. METHODOLOGY: The study was conducted at KLE’s Dr. Prabhakar Kore hospital and MRC, Department of General Medicine and Diabetes Centre. The duration of the study was 6 months with universal sample size. Data collection was done using well designed data collection form after obtaining the consent from the patient in their suitable language. One-time QoL assessment was conducted for the patient simultaneously during the KAP interview. RESULTS: The QoL assessment indicated that the males had better quality of life as compared to the females and the age group of 31- 40 years had the better QoL as compared to the other age groups, whereas the significant results couldn’t be ruled out in the duration groups. CONCLUSION: Diabetes Mellitus being a metabolic disease can be effectively managed by lifestyle modifications and adhering to the well scheduled treatment. The study revealed that adequate patient counselling can help in the effective management of the disease and can help the patients have a better quality of life
