24-Pulse Boosting Rectifier for Aviation Application

This article proposes a boosted-star 24-pulse diode bridge rectifier with an improved harmonic reduction circuit (BS24DBR-IHRC). It requires an autoconfigured transformer, two six-pulse DBR, and IHRC. The IHRC requires only one interphase reactor with an integrated magnetically coupled zero-sequence blocking transformer and two diodes, thereby offering lower conduction losses and easier design. In addition, the impact of power frequencies on performance and quality indices for aviation applications is investigated. Under the optimal turns ratio, the operating mode of the proposed rectifier is analyzed, and the functional relationships between input current total harmonic distortion, power factor, %kVA rating, and efficiency concerning load factor variation are observed. The BS24DBR-IHRC exhibits an input current that closely resembles a sinusoidal waveform, and satisfies the DO-160G standards. The diodes in the IHRC experience a maximum current of only 3.3% of the total load current. The proposed configuration has the ability to work as an aircraft power supply and a ground power unit. A comprehensive comparison of the proposed configuration highlights its enhanced performance and the experimental results confirming its viability and effectiveness are presented.
