Physical Activity Program Combined With Intragastric Balloon To Weight Loss Treatment In Quito Equador
Physical activity program combined with intragastric balloon to weight loss treatment in Quito Equador Authors: David Cabrera, MD. Jonathan Jerez, MDQuito, Ecuador, 2023 ABSTRACT Background: Obesity and sedentary lifestyle are associated with different medical conditions, such as cardiologic, respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary among others and constitute a severe health problem. Aims: To evaluated the use of a physical activy program combined with intragastric balloon (IGB) in the reduction of weight and in other measurements related to body composition. Methods: This is a retrospective, monocentric study, which included all patients that opted for the intragastric balloon Spatz® placement from January 2018 to July 2019, with fulfilment of inclusion and exclusion criteria. The patients were analysed after 6 and 12 months after the IGB placed. Results: One hundred and twenty-one subjects were included in this study. Mean age was 36 years and height of 1.64 ± 0.09, being 83 (68.6%) females and 38 (31.4%) males. Weight mean and standard deviation were 89.85 ± 14.65 Kg and body mass index (BMI) was 33.05 ± 4.03 and the BMI decreased to 29.4 kg/m2 with a mean weight of 79.83 kg, after 12 months of follow-up. There were statistical differences between BMI and the 12 months in fat percentage, fat free mass (kg) (FFM), visceral fat area (VFA) and basal metabolic rate (BMR). There was significant variation according gender, male with the highest reduction. The percentage of excess weight loss (EWL) was of 46.19 and the total weight loss (TWL) was 9.24 at the end of the study. Conclusions: The study demonstrated a benefit of a physical activy program combined with intragastric balloon (IGB) in the reduction of weight after 12 months. At the end of treatment, BMI and the measurements of body composition were significantly lower at the end of follow-up. Men benefited more than women of the treatment.
