The Effect Of Resistance Training On Patients With Non-obese Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Metformin is a commonly prescribed drug for the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and low skeletal muscle percentage is one of the important mechanisms of insulin resistance in non-obese PCOS patients. Exercise has been recognized as a possible alternative method to treat non-obese PCOS, however, effective exercise intervention has not been investigated yet. PURPOSE: to compare the effect of resistance training and metformin in the treatment of non-obese patients with PCOS. METHODS: Ten non-obese PCOS patients were enrolled in this study and randomized in experiment group (EG = 5, 29.4 ± 5.2 yrs, 160.4 ± 4.2 cm, 52.2 ± 3.5 kg) which underwent resistance training, and control group (CG = 5, 26.0 ± 4.8 yrs, 162 ± 1.6 cm, 55.3 ± 7.9 kg) which took metformin, for continuous 12 weeks. Skeletal muscle mass, lower limb explosive power and glycated hemoglobin were measured pre- and post- intervention. Data analysis was performed using repeated ANOVA. RESULTS: Significant interactions between time and group were noted for skeletal muscle mass (F = 6.323, P = 0.036, η2p = 0.441), significant difference between time were noted for lower limb explosive (F = 10.880, P = 0.011, η2p = 0.576), and no significant difference in glycated hemoglobin (F = 1.183, P = 0.308, η2p = 0.129). CONCLUSION: Twelve-week resistance training might be an effective intervention for the treatment of non-obese PCOS patients.
