Progress in Non‐equilibrium Green's Functions VIII (PNGF VIII)

(Dated: July 15, 2024) The eighth instance of the conference series “Progress in Non-equilibrium Green's Functions” (PNGF8) took place at Örebro University in Sweden on 7th-11th August 2023, gathering 52 scientists from four continents, see Figure 1. As the topical conferences on non-equilibrium Green's functions (NEGF), PNGF8 and the previous instances (Rostock 1999,[1] Dresden 2002,[2] Kiel 2005,[3] Glasgow 2009,[4] Jyväskylä 2012,[5] Lund 2015,[6] Frascati 2018[7]) brings together the research communities driving the development and applications of NEGF methods. The 19 invited talks, 13 contributing talks, and 11 posters focused on recent developments, current challenges, and future perspectives. The versatility of the NEGF method was reflected in the wide range of application areas presented, spanning from high temperature quantum plasmas and nuclear physics to condensed matter non-equilibrium spectroscopy and high harmonic generation. A special focus of the conference was numerical methods, including recent developments of linear scaling methods, tensor network and hierarchical low-rank compression methods. This topical section “Progress in Non-equilibrium Green's Functions” in Physica Status Solidi (b) comprises 8 peer reviewed articles from the participants of PNGF8. Here we highlight the Review article on the linear scaling G1-G2 method (article pssb.202300578) that has revolutionized the applicability of the Generalized Kadanoff-Baym Ansatz (GKBA) as can bee seen in the research article on the “Cheers” community code for GKBA calculations for quantum chemistry (article pssb.202300504). We gratefully acknowledge funding support from Psi-k, Kiel Nano Surface & Interface Science, CNR Istituto di Struttura della Materia, the Yambo project, Lund University, and Örebro University. Special thanks goes to the conference-organization administrational support at Örebro University. Finally, we are happy to announce that the ninth conference “Progress in Non-equilibrium Green's Functions” (PNGF9) will be organized by Michael Schüler at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland in August 2026. Tack för besöket i Örebro und uf wiederluege in die Schweiz! Hugo U. R. Strand, Claudio Verdozzi, and Michael Bonitz, Guest Editors. July 2024
