Clinical management of child accidents caused by poisony animals

Accidents caused by venomous animals are present in the routine of a pediatric emergency room. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical management of pediatric accidents caused by venomous animals in a hospital in Chapecó, SC. All medical records registered at the Hospital da Criança de Chapecó were analyzed between 2014 and 2018. A total of 138 medical records were evaluated. A higher frequency was identified associated with spiders (44.2%), the foot (34.06%), males and symptoms such as: heat, edema and erythema. The minimum age was five months and only 33 patients were indicated for exams. The study shows that the time between the accident and specialized care added to hospital preparation with technical conditions and qualified professionals who worked within the guidelines recommended by the Ministério da Saúde, were essential factors for the positive evolution of all cases. The importance of health education on the care for these animals and the relevance of studies of this nature to contribute to the knowledge and design of policies and actions to minimize these accidents are highlighted.
