THE PRINCIPLES OF NOMINATION IN THE BRISTOL GODONYMIC SYSTEM
This article is the first study in which a multilateral analysis of the system of names of inner-city linear objects of Bristol has been carried out, general and particular principles of their names have been identified, and the motivational model of the city's place names has been analyzed. In the work in the corpus of Bristol urbanonyms, in accordance with the lexical and semantic model developed by onomast A.M. Mezenko, the basic principles of the nomination of objects according to their connection with a person, relation to other objects, natural and qualitative characteristics, connection with abstract concepts are highlighted. These principles are implemented through various signs, on the basis of which thematic groups are formed. From the point of view of the frequency of use of godonyms, the most common are the principles of nomination for the connection of linear objects with humans and their natural and qualitative properties (34.0%, 31.9%, respectively). The prevailing principle of the nomination for human relations includes six thematic groups, of which the dominant ones in terms of number and diversity are names motivated by the surnames of landowners and homeowners, and memorial ones.
