Analysis of Oral Practice in Chinese Textbooks for Korean High Schools and Teaching Cases - A Case Study of『Chinese I』
In a non-target language environment, Chinese textbooks are the most important and authoritative reference materials for both teachers" instructional design and students" Chinese learning. Therefore, it is essential for Chinese language teachers to thoroughly understand the textbook"s underlying philosophy and adapt its content to specific teaching contexts when planning their lessons. Preliminary research indicates that studies on oral practice in Chinese textbooks are relatively scarce within the Korean academic community. This article thus selects a Korean high school Chinese textbook, Chinese I, to provide an overview of its overall structure and the organization of each lesson. Additionally, the article examines the oral exercises included in the textbook, analyzing them in terms of quantity, format, content, and topic selection. The analysis reveals that the textbook"s topics are chosen with a focus on cultural comparisons, and its format reflects a multimodal textbook design philosophy. Based on this preliminary investigation, the article suggests that when designing lessons using this textbook, teachers should provide supplementary background information for mechanical oral exercises, reorder and expand the vocabulary used in oral practices, and incorporate discussions on contemporary Chinese popular culture. Finally, the article presents a detailed case study of oral instruction using Lesson 5, "What is today"s date?" as an example, in combination with specific teaching scenarios. This study aims to provide high school Chinese teachers who use this textbook with practical teaching cases, thereby contributing to the body of research on high school Chinese language education in Korea.
